NARRATOR: Women and children could not

escape the consuming reach of this war.

I was surprised to learn that many of them

chose to march into the worst danger zones.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

Drummer boys, some as young as nine years old,

stood at the elbows of generals on the field of battle.

They beat out coded orders and signaled maneuvers.

[DRUMS BEATING]

These brave children inspired the ranks

with their heroic deeds.

ELEANOR HARVEY: The wounded drummer boy

tells one of the soldiers, carry me and I'll drum it through.

And so the sculpture shows him perched

on a soldier's shoulders.

And he's continuing to drum.

And he hasn't lost his resolve.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

NARRATOR: Many women also abandoned the relative safety

of home to face the perils of war.

DIANE WENDT: During the war, there

were innumerable opportunities for women to expand their role

and to take part in something much larger than their home.

NARRATOR: More than 250 women secretly joined

the Union and Confederate armies.

Frances Clayton, a.k.a.

Jack Williams, enlisted with her husband.

Loreta Janeta Velazquez, AKA Harry T Buford,

a self-appointed lieutenant, suffered multiple battle wounds

and doubled as a female spy.

Sarah Emma Edmonds, AKA Franklin Thompson, fought for two years

before deserting.

DIANE WENDT: Women joined the war effort for the same reason

as men.

And some of that's patriotism.

Some of that's adventure.

And some of that's for a paying job.

And the truth is that soldiering paid better than nursing.

NARRATOR: Some joined for love.

16-year-old Mary Galloway stole a uniform from her father

and slid into Union lines, searching for her sweetheart.

DIANE WENDT: Mary Galloway didn't last that long

because she was wounded.

And it was there that Clara Barton found her.

NARRATOR: The Civil War nurse forged

the way for women in the medical field

and treated thousands of soldiers.

Some proved unforgettable.

Galloway's secret was exposed.

Once she recovered, Barton helped

Mary locate her missing beau who was

recuperating from an amputation.

But for many, war didn't deliver a happy ending.

[MUSIC PLAYING]
